Cohabitation agreements between common-law partners
Whether you’ve just started living together or have been together for years, you don’t have the same rights as a couple that is married or in a civil union. Common-law spouses are not protected if they separate. Your notary can help you prepare a cohabitation agreement that will protect you throughout your relationship, even if you separate.
Amicable break-up
Your notary can help you achieve a separation in a respectful and cooperative manner. If you have a cohabitation agreement, a notary will guide you in fulfilling your rights and obligations. If you don’t have one, you will get the advice needed to find long-term solutions that will meet your own and your family’s needs.
Joint application for divorce on draft agreement
As of February 21, 2017, your notary can assist you with a joint application for divorce. If you and your spouse agree on the conditions of your separation, a notary can present the application for divorce in court in order to obtain a divorce judgment.
